Overview

The more introspective counterpart to the playful 'Ankhiyan Milake', 'Pardesi Balma' draws on the Purbi (eastern UP / Bihari) folk tradition of viraha geet — songs of a woman awaiting her husband gone to distant cities. Naushad was intimate with this tradition from his Lucknow childhood and set the melody with the restraint and melodic gravity of a genuine folk composition rather than a Bombay approximation. Zohrabai's lower register — her most expressive range — is given full latitude here, and the result is among the most authentically folk-rooted numbers in 1940s film music.

The Music

The sitar's drone and the tabla's light theka keep the song minimal — the melody carries the emotion without orchestral reinforcement. This economy is rare in 1940s film production and points to Naushad's understanding that the Purbi viraha tradition speaks through restraint.

The Poetry

Madhok's viraha lyric employs the archetype of the 'pardesi balma' — the stranger-husband — who recurs across Awadhi, Bhojpuri, and Braj poetry. The emotional core is simple: absence, waiting, fear.

The Story

Rattan (1944) was directed by M. Sadiq and produced by Abdul Rashid Kardar for Navin Pictures. The film — the highest-grossing Hindi film of 1944 — starred Karan Dewan and Swaran Lata, with female playback provided by Zohrabai Ambalewali and Amirbai Karnataki. Naushad grew up in Lucknow and was intimately familiar with the Purbi (eastern UP / Bihari) folk tradition from childhood — a tradition in which viraha songs of a woman waiting for her absent husband were performed at weddings, festivals, and seasonal rituals. He carried this knowledge into Rattan's score, giving 'Pardesi Balma' the melodic gravity and restraint of a genuine folk composition rather than a commercial approximation. The sitar-and-tabla-only arrangement — against the heavier orchestral settings of some contemporaneous Bombay productions — was a deliberate choice that distinguished Naushad's Rattan numbers as rooted in folk practice. Zohrabai Ambalewali's lower register suited this material particularly well, and the result is among the most authentically folk-rooted numbers in 1940s Hindi film music.

The Legacy

A precedent for the viraha-flavoured 'pardesi' genre in Hindi film music — the emotional archetype that Shailendra and S.D. Burman would later develop to extraordinary refinement in the 1950s.

Margin Notes

Rattan (1944) ran in theatres for three years in Karachi, Lahore and Bombay — an extraordinary run attributed in large part to the exceptional hold of its folk-rooted songs on audiences from rural and urban backgrounds alike.

Naushad (1919–2006) grew up in Lucknow, where he absorbed the Purbi and Awadhi folk music traditions from an early age; 'Pardesi Balma' draws directly on the viraha geet convention of a woman waiting for a husband who has left for distant cities — a social reality for millions of families in 1940s India.

Zohrabai Ambalewali's contralto voice range — unusually low for a female film singer of the era — suited the Purbi viraha material particularly well, giving 'Pardesi Balma' its characteristic deep, earthy ache.

D.N. Madhok, who wrote 'Pardesi Balma's lyrics, also wrote the film's story, screenplay and dialogues — an unusual multi-hyphenate role that gave Rattan's songs an especially tight thematic integration with the film's narrative.
