“Natya-Sangeet Discs” represents Bal Gandharva's early-1920s record output for the Gramophone Company — pads of Manapman, Swayamvar and Ekach Pyala on His Master's Voice 78s, the commercial summit of the stage-to-disc crossover.

The early-1920s Bal Gandharva sides distil the Mandali's stagecraft: Bakhale's and Tembe's raag-melodies, the honeyed glide of the most imitated voice in western India, organ and tabla sketching the absent orchestra pit.

Khadilkar's mythological eloquence, Gadkari's tragic Sindhu — the pads carried whole dramatic worlds in a stanza, which is why a household that never saw the plays could still weep at the records.

The early 1920s were the Gandharva Natak Mandali's imperial noon — lavish productions, sold-out tours, and a disc catalogue that functioned as the company's broadcasting arm. The records financed and advertised the stage; the stage fed the records. The talkies would break the model within a decade, but in 1922 it was the most successful music business in western India.

These catalogues fixed natya sangeet's canon and carried Bal Gandharva's voice beyond the playhouse generation — the reason his singing, not only his legend, survives.
