Overview

One of three Meenakshi Shirodkar solos in Pannadai. Its address — sanwara, the dark one, salona, the lovely one — is the standing epithet-pair for Krishna in the north Indian devotional song tradition, which places the number in the bhakti register rather than the romantic one, though the two have always overlapped in this repertoire. Beyond the credits carried by hindigeetmala and Saregama, little about the song's placement in the film is documented.

The Music

The song sits in the light devotional idiom Gyan Dutt used often for his heroines: melody carried plainly, phrases short enough for an actress-singer to shape without strain, and none of the ornamentation he reserved for his trained classical voices. It is a bhajan as film music understood the form in 1945 — devotional in address, popular in construction.

The Poetry

D.N. Madhok's lyric works the oldest device in Krishna poetry: the devotee speaks to the god as to a lover, so that the language of longing does double duty. Calling him mora — mine — rather than by name is itself the claim the poem makes; the whole tradition of the sakhi and the gopi rests on that possessive. Nothing in the surviving documentation records how the song functioned dramatically in a film about a Rajput nursemaid, so its narrative purpose is best left open.

The Story

Pannadai (1945) was produced by Kamalabai Mangalorekar for Pradeep Pictures, Bombay, and directed by Ram Daryani, with Durga Khote in the title role and Chandra Mohan, Meenakshi Shirodkar, Master Vithal, Mubarak, M. Ismail, Gope and Nana Saheb Phatak in support. The film retells the sixteenth-century Mewar episode in which Panna Dhai, nursemaid to the child heir Udai Singh II, put her own son Chandan in the prince's bed so the usurper Banbir would kill him instead, then carried the heir to safety at Kumbhalgarh. Gyan Dutt wrote ten songs for it, with lyrics split between D.N. Madhok and Dewan Sharar.

The Legacy

The song survives on the Saregama catalogue of the film rather than in general circulation, and it has not attracted the commentary that the Begum Akhtar and Rajkumari numbers have. It stands as an example of the ordinary, competent devotional song that made up much of the 1940s film-music economy — the material that filled the middle of an album while one or two numbers carried the record sales.
