मेरे नाथ तुम्हीं सब कुछ हो

A Srimati Ghosh solo from the Devdasi (1945) soundtrack, composed by K.C. Dey to words by Narottam Vyas. The title is the flattest and most complete statement of the album's governing idea — that the deity is not one good among others but the sum of everything the devotee has. 'Naath', lord or protector, is the word a wife or a dependent uses, which gives the surrender a domestic rather than a cosmic colour.

The setting is unhurried and consonant, with the melody resolving cleanly rather than straining — appropriate to a lyric that has already stopped struggling. Dey scores it at chamber scale: voice forward, harmonium sustaining underneath, percussion barely marking time. Compared with the Bombay film songs of 1945, which were acquiring bigger string sections and busier arrangements, this is deliberately old-fashioned, and the plainness is what carries the sentiment.

This is prapatti stated without metaphor. Where most bhakti lyrics arrive at surrender through an image — the boat, the shelter, the refuge at the feet — this one simply asserts it as a fact about the speaker's world, and the absence of figurative machinery is itself the effect. The choice of 'naath' rather than a Krishna epithet matters: it is a relational word, defining the deity by what he is to her rather than by what he is in himself, and it places the singer in the position of one who has no independent standing. Narottam Vyas writes it in unadorned Hindi, at the opposite end of the register from the Sanskritic litanies he supplies elsewhere in the same score.

Devdasi's eleven songs are, with one exception, devotional, and this is one of Srimati Ghosh's two solos in the film.
