The Monographपरिचय Overview

Ban Phool (1945) is otherwise a Kanan Devi record; this is the one track on it sung by a man, and the man is Hemanta Mukherjee — Hemant Kumar — then a Calcutta singer in his mid-twenties with only a scattering of Hindi film recordings behind him (Meenakshi in 1942, Irada in 1944) and six years still to go before he moved to Bombay. The title, roughly 'fix your flame upon Him, He is the one who helps', places the song in the film's consolatory register: an address urging steadiness of faith rather than a description of feeling. Dhiren Mitra composed it; the Hindi Geet Mala catalogue credits the words to Pandit Madhur.
The Music

Nothing survives in print about this number's arrangement, scale or tala. Dhiren Mitra is among the least documented composers of the Calcutta studios, and Ban Phool is not in public circulation, so any account of the music would be invention rather than description. What can honestly be said belongs to the singer: Hemant Kumar's recordings from these Calcutta years already show the low-set, unforced, almost conversational steadiness that would later make him the obvious choice for consoling, lightly ornamented material — the quality that carried Rabindra Sangeet for him from 1944 onward and that Bombay would spend the 1950s exploiting.
The Poetry

Lau lagana — to fix one's flame, to set the wick of the heart burning steadily toward a single object — belongs to the vocabulary of Indian devotional poetry rather than to the ghazal. In the bhakti lyric the lamp is the self and the steadiness of its flame is the whole measure of faith; the image assumes a wind that will try the flame. The second half of the title makes the argument practical: the addressee is madadgar, the one who helps, which turns devotion from an aesthetic posture into something closer to a reasoned choice. Set inside a film whose heroine is named for a flower that grows unsponsored in the wild, that reasoning is not abstract — it is advice to someone with no one else to turn to.
The Story

Ban Phool was made in Calcutta by P. R. Productions, produced by P.N. Roy, directed by Niren Lahiri and written by Pranab Roy, with Kanan Devi as Champa and Krishnakant as Kishore, in a village world that also holds Devi Mukherjee's zamindar Narendra, Ahindra Choudhury's Ramlal, Rajmohan's Ramesh Chacha and Hiralal's Kazi Saheb. Which of them this song belongs to is not recorded anywhere consulted — no plot summary of the film survives, and the surviving credits do not attach songs to scenes. As the soundtrack's single male number in a devotional register, it would sit naturally with the young hero or with one of the film's older men, but that is inference and is offered as such.
The Legacy

Whatever claim this track still has is Hemant Kumar's. He did not become a Hindi film presence until Filmistan brought him to Bombay in 1951, for Anand Math (1952); the Hindi songs he recorded in Calcutta in the early and mid-1940s are the prehistory of that career, sung before anyone had a commercial reason to keep them, and they are correspondingly hard to hear today. 'Laga Usse Lau Tu Madadgar Hai' is one of them — a catalogue line for a voice that would, within a decade, be one of the most recognisable in India.

Margin Notes'

Ban Phool's nine-song soundtrack contains exactly one male vocal — this one. Kanan Devi sings seven of the remaining eight, and Anjali Biswas the ninth.

Hemant Kumar's Hindi film singing began in Calcutta with Meenakshi (1942) and Irada (1944), the latter under composer Amar Nath. Ban Phool (1945) belongs to that same early Calcutta phase, six years before he moved to Bombay.

1945 was also the year Hemant Kumar married the singer Bela Mukherjee, who had sung in the Bengali film Kashinath (1943).
