From the Haq soundtrack (Times Music / Junglee Music, 2025), 'Kya Paaya' is a four-minute-nineteen-second meditation on mutual loss, sung by the Ali Brothers, composed by Vishal Mishra and written by Kaushal Kishore. The notable musical feature is the acoustic guitar of Keba Jeremiah alongside the sarangi of Dilshad Khan — two instruments rarely paired — creating a sound neither purely contemporary nor purely classical. In the context of a Shah Bano film, the question 'kya paaya' (what did you gain?) resonates beyond the romantic: the film asks what the husband, wife, courts, and society all gained from the legal battle.

The unusual pairing of acoustic guitar (Keba Jeremiah) and sarangi (Dilshad Khan) gives 'Kya Paaya' a textural identity distinct from every other song on the Haq album. The sarangi — associated with Hindustani classical and courtesan music — carries associations of longing and loss that pre-date Bollywood. A Darbari-adjacent descending minor melodic shape is audible in the chorus — the raag of night, court, and unresolved grief.

Kaushal Kishore inverts the usual romantic question — instead of 'what did I lose', he asks 'what did anyone gain?' In a zero-sum emotional ledger, loss without gain on either side suggests the whole enterprise was pointless — a dark reading the film's Shah Bano context makes deliberately resonant.

The Ali Brothers were cast for their Sufi folk quality matching the sarangi-guitar arrangement. Vishal Mishra wanted each song on Haq to have a distinct sonic personality rather than blending into a uniform 'film album' sound — 'Kya Paaya' is the clearest realisation of that intent.
