'Kya Musibat Hai Jawani' is the second of Amirbai Karnataki's two solos in Mazdoor (1945), written by Gopal Singh Nepali and composed by Hari Prasanna Das. The title states its own complaint outright: youth as trouble, a condition to be endured rather than enjoyed. It runs 3:23 on the Saregama/HMV reissue, which is where the recording survives; the film has not stayed in circulation.

Neither the arrangement nor the form of this track is documented in any source located, and it has not been assessed here by listening; no raag, taal or instrumentation is therefore claimed. The one firm musical fact is the voice. Amirbai Karnataki had one of the most recognisable timbres of the mid-1940s — bright, slightly reedy, unmistakably placed forward — and her strength was in this kind of medium-tempo, plainly-worded number rather than in classical elaboration, which is exactly what a Filmistan social film needed.

The line inverts the standard film-song treatment of youth. Jawani in the popular lyric of the 1940s is usually an occasion — for pride, teasing, longing — and here it is named a musibat, a calamity, something that has arrived at the wrong time and now has to be managed. Read against the film, the inversion has weight: in a story about mill labour and a village girl looking for work, being young is not a licence, it is exposure. Nepali does not decorate the complaint; he lets the flat noun do the work, and the plainness is the point.

Mazdoor was made at Filmistan under Nitin Bose, with Nasir Khan, Indumati and Veera all appearing in their first film. Its story moves a village youth into a city mill, sets him up as manager after he rescues the owner's daughter, and then breaks the arrangement apart in a labour dispute that forces him back towards the workers and the girl he had left. The particular scene this song accompanies is not recorded in any source located, so no picturisation is described here.

The track is preserved on the six-song Saregama/HMV reissue of the Mazdoor album and is otherwise little discussed. It belongs to the enormous, largely unexamined middle of Amirbai Karnataki's discography — the hundreds of recordings she made across studios in the years either side of Kismet (1943), of which only a handful are ever cited.
