The Monographपरिचय Overview

"Kaafir - In Search Of 72 Hoorain" is the theme song released for 72 Hoorain, Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan's long-delayed drama about two young men, Hakim and Bilal, who carry out a suicide bombing at Mumbai's Gateway of India believing they will be rewarded with 72 celestial maidens (hoorain) in paradise. Produced under the Zoee banner and distributed via Virgin Music Group, the track is credited to composer-singers Maan Panu and Sonam Negi with Isis Paul, and was released as a single on 29 June 2023, days ahead of the film's 7 July 2023 Indian theatrical release — nearly four years after its 2019 festival premiere. The official YouTube description frames it explicitly as the film's theme song, tracing "the journey of innocent individuals who awaken to the shocking truth of being manipulated into terrorism." Unlike the film's other associated older songs (patriotic and devotional numbers reused from earlier decades), this is the one genuinely new 2023 composition tied to the project, though its formal inclusion in trade-press-listed official soundtracks remains thinly documented — a reflection of the film's low-key, delayed rollout and modest theatrical reception.
The Music

Composed and performed jointly by Maan Panu and Sonam Negi under the Zoee banner, with Isis Paul featured as a third vocalist, the track favours a slow, atmospheric build over conventional filmi song structure — closer to an alternative/indie theme composition than a typical Hindi soundtrack number. Its restrained tempo and minor-key mood mirror the psychological unraveling of the film's protagonists, functioning more as an emotional prologue to the film than a standalone chart single.
The Poetry

The lyric turns the word "kaafir" (infidel) back on its own users — questioning whether the true disbelief lies with the deceived young men or with those who manipulated them using the promise of "72 hoorain." It is a spare, questioning lyric rather than a narrative one, built to sit under the film's imagery of purgatorial doubt rather than to stand alone as a conventional song text.
The Story

72 Hoorain follows suicide bombers Hakim (Pavan Malhotra) and Bilal (Aamir Bashir) who die attacking Mumbai's Gateway of India and find themselves in a purgatory-like state, gradually doubting the promised heavenly reward and confronting how they were radicalized. Directed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, the film premiered at IFFI 2019 to a standing ovation and won the ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal (Special Mention) and Best Direction at the 67th National Film Awards, but its Indian theatrical release was delayed until 7 July 2023. "Kaafir" was released as a promotional single just days before that long-awaited release, positioned to reintroduce the film's themes to audiences after the multi-year gap.
The Legacy

72 Hoorain's theatrical release underperformed commercially (roughly Rs. 0.35 crore on opening day with under 9% occupancy), and "Kaafir" itself remains a modestly-viewed track, with its official YouTube upload and reposted versions together drawing under 20,000 views. Its cultural footprint is tied more to the film's own recognition — the National Award for Best Direction and the IFFI honour — than to independent chart or streaming performance.
