'Jhulana Jhulao Ri' (c. 1932, Hindusthan Records, Calcutta) is commonly cited as K.L. Saigal's first hit gramophone record — a monsoon jhoola song recorded while his early films were failing. It launched the disc career that ran beside his films for life. Recording in the pre-1941 public-domain band; lyric text beyond the refrain unverified.

The jhoola song asks for the exact qualities Saigal owned without training: an unhurried line, a caress on the word, ornament so light it feels like breath. On this side the twenty-eight-year-old sounds already complete — the velvet lower register, the sob held just under the note — everything that films would amplify for the next fifteen years was present in miniature on this disc.

'Swing me, friend' — the jhoola lyric belongs to sawan: swings hung from mango boughs, the parched earth answering rain, Radha and her sakhis in the Braj imagination. It is a woman's-voice genre by tradition, and like the thumri singers before him Saigal took the feminine utterance without apology — male voice, female longing, the oldest crossover in Hindustani song.

In 1932 Chandi Charan Saha's Hindusthan Records opened in Calcutta as a swadeshi challenger to the European gramophone giants, and the unknown singer from New Theatres' flop films was among its early signings. The disc sold; the voice travelled where the films had not. By the time Puran Bhagat arrived in 1933, gramophone owners across north India already knew the name on the label.

'Jhulana Jhulao Ri' opened the parallel track of Saigal's career — the non-film disc artist of bhajans and ghazals — which would give Hindi music some of its permanent treasures, Ghalib sides included. It also proved, before playback existed, that records could make a film singer's fame rather than merely follow it.
