Within 90 seconds it pivots into a walking jazz bass and brushed snare — then Chauhan begins to scat, his voice weaving improvised syllables over a chord progression that nods to '50s American jazz. The final section returns to the folk idiom, but with strings added, creating a palimpsest of musical traditions that mirrors the film's theme of memories layered over time.

Kamil's 'ishq mastana' — mad love — is a Sufi concept that dissolves the self in the beloved. Here the word 'mastana' (intoxicated, wandering) invokes the figure of the Sufi faqir who has abandoned worldly identity, mapping romantic love onto the film's larger theme of people who cross borders for love.

In press interviews, A.R. Rahman said 'Ishq Mastana' was the track that frightened him most during production because of its structural ambition. He reportedly completed it only after Imtiaz Ali gave him a brief to score it for 'a village wedding that has been invaded by a jazz band from Lahore.' Mohit Chauhan's scatting was improvised in the recording studio rather than notated.

'Ishq Mastana' proved divisive on release — some critics found its genre-shifting 'confused', while others considered it Rahman's most daring fusion since 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' (1998). The track's jazz-folk blend became a talking point in Indian music criticism about how Bollywood negotiates global influence.
