The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Dheere Dheere Aaye Piya Badal Kare' is an Amirbai Karnataki solo in Chand Tara (1945), music by Gyan Dutt, lyrics by Swami Ramanand Saraswati. The title joins two of the most durable elements of North Indian song — the beloved's approach and the behaviour of clouds — and its adverbial opening, dheere dheere, sets a tempo before a single note is heard. Titles of this shape belong to the monsoon repertoire, which in Hindi cinema is less a subject than a season with its own conventions. Nothing about the picturisation survives; the film is not in circulation.
The Music

Monsoon songs are the one place where the Hindi film composer can borrow openly from the classical repertoire without the audience finding it heavy: raags associated with the rains carry their season with them, and even a listener with no training recognises the association. Gyan Dutt's melodic vocabulary was north Indian and raag-informed, learned in the Ranjit Movietone years, and a slow monsoon number is the natural place for that training to show. Whether this particular song used a rain raag is not recorded and is not asserted here.
The Poetry

In the barahmasa and kajri traditions the monsoon is not weather but a test: it is the season in which a woman whose man is away suffers most, and the season in which, if he is coming at all, he comes. Clouds in these songs are agents — they gather, they threaten, they withhold — and a line that puts 'piya' and 'badal' in the same breath is asking the listener to hold both possibilities at once. 'Dheere dheere' is the crucial qualifier: an arrival that is slow is an arrival still in doubt, and the whole suspense of the monsoon song lies in that unfinished approach.
The Story

This is one of five solos Amirbai Karnataki sings in Chand Tara, alongside 'Jhanan Mori Baje Payaliya', 'Pardes Mein Jane Wale', 'Main Tujhse Poochhti Hoon' and 'Tujhe Meri Kasam'. Taken together the five cover a standard emotional spread for a 1940s heroine's songs — a dance number, a farewell, a monsoon song, a question and an oath — which is how a film's female lead was usually serviced when the story called for her to be heard at each turn of the plot. The plot itself is lost, but the spread implies its shape.
The Legacy

No reissue or later use of the song is documented. Its place in a reference catalogue is as one of the five points that together outline the heroine's arc in a film whose script has not survived — the only method left for reading the shape of a lost picture is to read its song list, and a monsoon song at this position in the sequence is itself a piece of evidence about where the story stood.
