'Dage Dil Ki Itlate Jaye Yaad Karti Hai Tumhe' is among the eleven songs documented for Bulbule Baghdad (1941), the K. Amarnath fantasy for Mohan Pictures. Composed by Ram Gopal Pandey to Ehsan Rizvi's lyrics, the title's idiom of the heart's scars 'sending word' is pure Urdu ghazal sensibility. The playback singer is not recorded in available sources.

काव्य The Poetry

The phrase 'dage dil ki itlata' (the heart's wounds sending word, filing a report) is a remarkable instance of Urdu's capacity to make bureaucratic vocabulary poetic. 'Itlata' means an official notification or report — a word drawn from the Mughal administrative lexicon. Ehsan Rizvi uses it to say: the heart's suffering is so systematic, so relentless, that it sends official notice. This is classic Urdu ghazal logic: taking the bureaucratic, the formal, the impersonal, and investing it with the most intimate feeling. The second movement of the title — 'yaad karti hai tumhe' (she still remembers you) — shifts from the heart's private pain to the imagination of the beloved's reciprocal longing: even in captivity, she remembers. Together the two clauses create a complete emotional circuit: the lover's wound is evidence, and the evidence confirms that the beloved's feeling endures.

कहानी The Story

Bulbule Baghdad (1941) was a fantasy-adventure film produced by Mohan Pictures and directed by K. Amarnath. Its plot centered on Rashid (played by Jayant), a young government officer in Baghdad in love with Bulbul (Indurani), who is captured by bandits and disappears. The setting — a romanticized Baghdad transplanted into the Bombay studio imagination — was part of a wider genre of Arabian Nights-inflected fantasy films popular in 1930s-40s Hindi cinema. A lament song like 'Dage Dil Ki Itlate Jaye Yaad Karti Hai Tumhe' would have served the hero's anguished state after his beloved's abduction: the heart's wounds sending coded word that she is still remembered, across an impossible distance. Music was composed by Ram Gopal Pandey (also listed in some sources as Rajgopal Pandey) to Ehsan Rizvi's Urdu lyrics. The playback singer for this track is not documented in surviving sources.
