Overview

Indubala — taught by Gauhar Jaan herself — stood at the centre of Calcutta's record trade as the 1930s opened: dadra, kirtan and Bengali songs cut prolifically in the new electric sound. Her 1930 sides, made in the very months her guru was dying far away in Mysore, are the lineage audibly continuing.

The Music

Salon ornament tamed for the home gramophone; her kirtans carried Bengal's devotional lilt into the Hindustani list.

The Poetry

Dadra's flirtation and kirtan's surrender in one catalogue — the two poles of the Calcutta list, both in fluent Braj-Bengali diction.

The Story

The year 1930 carried a specific shadow for Indubala: Gauhar Jaan, who had taught her, guided her early recording career, and whose HMV breakthrough in 1902 had created the industry framework that made Indubala's own career possible, died on 17 January 1930 in Mysore. She was impoverished and largely forgotten at the end; the gramophone had used her and moved on. Indubala's 1930 sessions — prolific, commercially steady, conducted in Calcutta's improving studio facilities — took place against this backdrop. Her dadra and kirtan sides of this year are characterised by an ease and control that marks an artist at the peak of her career: the dadra's playful shringaar texts (Braj Bhasha, seasonal themes, romantic teasing) rendered with relaxed authority, and the kirtan sides — Bengali devotional songs drawing on Chaitanya Vaishnavism — bringing a different emotional register. The HMV Calcutta catalogue distinguished kirtan separately from bhajan precisely because of its Bengali character and its association with group worship, and Indubala's bilingual fluency made her uniquely suited to bridge both categories for a Calcutta audience that consumed both Hindi and Bengali repertoire.

Margin Notes

Gauhar Jaan died on 17 January 1930 in Mysore at approximately age 56, in poverty — a documented contrast to her earlier celebrity as India's highest-paid gramophone artist of the acoustic era; Indubala, her most celebrated disciple, was among those who continued the Calcutta musical lineage Gauhar had established.

Dadra, which Indubala recorded prolifically, is a light classical form using a six-beat taal (dadra taal) with texts typically addressing seasonal or romantic themes in Braj Bhasha; it was one of the most commercially accessible classical forms on the gramophone catalogue.

Kirtan as recorded in Calcutta in the 1920s–30s drew primarily from the Vaishnava tradition of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1534), whose 'pada' (verse) literature had created a vast devotional repertoire in Bengali and Brajabuli, both of which appeared in Indubala's kirtan recordings.

By 1930 Indubala had been recording continuously for approximately fifteen years and was one of the most commercially successful women artists in India's gramophone history by total sides issued — a status achieved without any court or institutional patronage.

Her 1930 dadra recording in Raag Khamaj — 'Jhoom Jhoom Ke Nachti Aayi Baariyaa' (title reconstructed from catalogue) — was reportedly among the best-selling individual HMV sides of that year's Calcutta catalogue.
