चैती

A chaiti recorded by Janki Bai of Allahabad around 1911 for The Gramophone Company — the Purab spring form, sung from its Allahabad heartland by one of the gramophone era's most popular voices.

Chaiti moves with a distinctive lilt — each line landing on the refrain 'ho Rama' — and lives between raag and folk air, usually in a Mishra Tilang or Khamaj colour over a gentle Deepchandi. Janki Bai's Purab-ang training made the form home ground: ornament kept light, words kept forward.

Chaiti poetry counts the pleasures and pangs of the month of Chait — ripening fields, wedding season, the absent beloved. The text of this particular side is not documented, so its words are left unquoted.

Janki Bai of Allahabad — the 'Chhappan Chhuriwali' who survived a fifty-six-knife attack in childhood — was by 1911 one of the Gramophone Company's most dependable sellers, her catalogue spanning thumri, dadra, ghazal, hori, kajri, chaiti and bhajan. Chaiti was native soil: Allahabad sits at the heart of the Purab seasonal tradition.

Through discs like this, chaiti travelled beyond the Ganga-Jamuna belt and entered the standard repertoire of recorded light classical music — a path later walked by Siddheshwari Devi, Rasoolan Bai and Girija Devi, who made the form famous on the concert stage.
