Overview

The devotional number of Gaon Ki Gori (1945), sung by Amirbai Karnataki. Where the rest of Shyam Sundar's score is divided between Noor Jehan's laments and the village dance and harvest songs, this is the one track pitched at a deity: an address to Krishna's flute asking it to wake the singer's sleeping fortune.

The Music

The bhajan idiom in 1940s Hindi film was a settled thing — slow to medium tempo, a melody that stays inside a narrow, singable compass, dholak or tabla marking a simple cycle, and a refrain that returns often enough for an audience to join. Shyam Sundar works inside that convention rather than against it, and his light orchestration, harmonium and a supporting string line, suits a song meant to sound like something a woman might sing at home. Amirbai Karnataki, who had recorded devotional material widely by 1945, sings it without ornament; the appeal of the track is its plainness.

The Poetry

The flute is Krishna's standing attribute, and in bhakti poetry its sound is what pulls the listener out of ordinary life — the gopis leaving their houses at the sound of the bansi is the founding image of the whole tradition. Wali Saheb's move is to redirect that summons: instead of asking to be called away, the singer asks the flute to wake her bhag, her fortune, which is to ask for something worldly in devotional language. That is a very Indian-cinema kind of prayer, and it fits a film about a village girl whose problem is not spiritual but economic — a marriage arranged to settle a debt. The vocabulary stays simple, Braj-inflected Hindi rather than Urdu, marking the song as the heroine's world speaking rather than her inner voice.

The Story

Durga Khote, who plays the hero's mother in the film, was by 1945 one of the most respected figures in Indian cinema — a college-educated Maharashtrian woman who had entered films in 1931 when the profession was still socially unacceptable for women of her background, and whose presence in a cast signalled seriousness. The playback goes to Amirbai Karnataki, in one of her three Gaon Ki Gori songs; Noor Jehan, playing the title role, sings only for herself.

The Legacy

The song is preserved in the 1945 song catalogues and in retrospective listings of Amirbai Karnataki's female solos of that year. It is not among the film's remembered numbers — those are Noor Jehan's — but it documents something the album is otherwise silent about: how a Lahore-trained composer working in a Punjabi-rural idiom handled a straightforwardly Vaishnav devotional brief.
