'Bandh Huye Hai Dwar Maina' is one of the recorded songs of Raj Nartaki (1941), the trilingual Wadia Movietone production directed by Modhu Bose. Set to Timir Baran's score with lyrics by Pandit Indra, it is performed by the male voice Mrinal Kanti Ghosh — one of the Bengal-school singers associated with Timir Baran's musical world. The song forms part of the film's dance-and-devotion driven soundtrack.
The Poetry

The title 'Bandh Huye Hai Dwar Maina' — 'The doors are closed, O myna bird (maina)' — addresses the myna bird as a messenger-confidante, a device from the sandesh-kavya (messenger poetry) tradition of classical Sanskrit and vernacular Indian poetry. The myna (maina) is the domestic bird of the Indian household, known for its ability to mimic speech; in poetry it becomes the natural go-between for lovers separated by closed doors. 'Bandh dwar' (closed doors/gates) is the threshold symbol of unfulfilled desire — the boundary between the self and the beloved, between the human and the divine. In a film set in the royal court and focused on a dancer whose social position places her behind invisible barriers, the image of closed doors resonates as both physical and social metaphor. Pandit Indra Chandra's lyric draws on this symbolism to give the song a double register: the literal closed door of the palace, and the invisible boundary that separates the court dancer from the prince.
The Story

Raj Nartaki (1941), also released in English as The Court Dancer, was directed by Modhu Bose for Wadia Movietone and was released simultaneously in English, Bengali, and Hindi — described in its own promotion as 'the first Indian film with dialogue in English to be entirely produced in India with an all-Indian personnel.' Based on the Bengali play Manmath Ray, the film is set in the early 19th century Manipur Kingdom and tells the story of social barriers between Prince Chandrakirti (Prithviraj Kapoor) and the court dancer Indrani (Sadhana Bose, an exponent of both Kathak and Manipuri dance). Timir Baran composed the music; Pandit Indra Chandra wrote the lyrics for the Hindi version. 'Bandh Huye Hai Dwar Maina' was sung by Mrinal Kanti Ghosh, one of the Bengal-school vocalists working in Timir Baran's musical orbit. The song forms part of the Hindi-language soundtrack of what was critically the most successful version of the trilingual production.
The Legacy

Raj Nartaki (1941) retains a small but documented place in the history of Indian cinema as the country's first trilingual production and the first English-dialogue film made entirely with an all-Indian cast and crew. Music historians have occasionally noted Timir Baran's score for this film as an early example of his orchestral ambition — he is credited as the 'father of Indian symphony orchestra' for his pioneering use of full orchestration in Indian film music. The film itself was critically successful in its Bengali version, while the Hindi and English versions were commercially disappointing. Its preservation in film archives has allowed researchers to study the film's production practices.
