The Monographपरिचय Overview

This is the one duet in Pandit Amarnath's nine-song score for Dhamki, and the only track on which a male voice appears: Munawar Sultana sings opposite Dhaniram. Both the hindigeetmala listing and the Pakistan Film Magazine archive agree on the pairing. The scene it belongs to is not recoverable from surviving records, but its setting is stated in the title itself — a woman standing on her own kothe, the flat rooftop terrace that is the classic vantage point of the north Indian love song.
The Music

Amarnath scores the film's one dialogue song as a straightforward alternation of voices rather than a blended duet, which is the standard Lahore practice of the period: each singer takes a full phrase, and the exchange is the structure. The idiom is closer to folk than to the ghazal-shaped numbers elsewhere in the score, and the tempo sits in the walking middle range that lets a lyric be heard clearly on a shellac pressing.
The Poetry

Madhok places the singer on the kothe — the open terrace where women of a north Indian household came at night for air, and from which, in the poetry of the region, they watch the street, the moon and whoever happens to pass. It is an architecture of licensed visibility: high enough to be respectable, open enough for an exchange to happen. Pairing that setting with an open moonlit night gives the lyric its whole charge without needing a single explicit line, and the duet form then supplies the other half of the conversation the terrace was always waiting for.
The Story

Dhamki belonged to the last full working season of Lahore's film industry. Pancholi Art Pictures was, on Wikipedia's account, the largest film studio in the city, and it ran on a repertory model: a family director in Ravindra Dave, a house composer in Pandit Amarnath, a house lyricist in D. N. Madhok, and contract players including Ragini, Al Nasir, Smriti Biswas, Kalavati and Om Prakash. The Hindi Film Geet Kosh records the film's censor certificate as dated 18 December 1945, and the Pakistan Film Magazine archive records its Lahore premiere at the Palace cinema on 7 March 1946 — certified in one year, shown in the next.
The Legacy

Dhamki's songs did not enter the standard repertoire and the film itself appears to be lost, so this side survives as an archival credit rather than as music people still hear. That makes the credit itself worth keeping straight: the singer named on the label, Munawar Sultana, is documented by both the hindigeetmala and Pakistan Film Magazine song lists for this picture. The Lahore studio that made it, Pancholi Art Pictures, ceased to exist as a going concern within two years, and its composer Pandit Amarnath was dead by 1947.

Margin Notes

D. N. Madhok, who wrote all nine Dhamki lyrics, wrote more than 800 songs in a four-decade career, making him one of the most prolific lyricists of the pre-Partition Hindi film industry.

Four independent sources — the Hindi Film Geet Kosh database, hindigeetmala, myswar and the Pakistan Film Magazine archive — agree on nine songs for Dhamki, all composed by Pandit Amarnath to lyrics by D. N. Madhok. They do not agree on every singer: the Geet Kosh gives Zeenat Begum five of the nine, Munawar Sultana three and Amirbai Karnataki one, while the Pakistani and myswar listings give Zeenat Begum six.
