The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Ae Baad-e-Saba Kuch Tune Suna' is one of the ghazals in Shyam Sundar's nine-song score for Bhai Jaan (1945), written by Partau Lakhnavi. Its singer is the one credit in the album that the sources actively contradict each other on: English Wikipedia, citing Cineplot's compilation of Noor Jehan's 1941–1950 songs, gives it to Noor Jehan, while MySwar assigns it to Zeenat Begum and HindiGeetMala names no singer at all. It is credited to Noor Jehan here, with the conflict recorded rather than hidden.
The Music

A song addressed to the wind asks for a particular kind of setting: something that moves without arriving, that circles the question rather than answering it. Ghazal composers of the 1940s handled this with a slow melodic line that keeps returning to the same pitch at the point of address, so the question sounds asked repeatedly rather than once. Shyam Sundar's orchestration in this period is deliberately spare — harmonium under the voice, sarangi or violin answering in the gaps, tabla or dholak kept low — a Lahore-school economy that suited the ghazal-dominated album Filmindia found monotonous but tuneful.
The Poetry

Baad-e-saba is the dawn breeze of Persian and Urdu poetry — not weather but a character, the courier who moves between the lover and a beloved who cannot be approached directly. Asking the breeze whether it has heard anything is a formal move with a long history: it lets the speaker enquire without confessing, and it locates the beloved somewhere the speaker is not permitted to go. Partau Lakhnavi is working here in a fully classical idiom, which makes this the most conventionally literary of the nine Bhai Jaan lyrics; it is also the one whose meaning survives intact from the title alone, since the trope carries its whole situation with it. Filmindia thought the picture's lyrics its weak point, but the complaint was about plainness, and this title is the album's clearest gesture toward the older tradition.
The Story

In the film Noor Jehan plays Benazeer, a dancing girl whose situation is exactly the one the ghazal convention was built for: a woman who may be adored publicly and claimed by nobody. Filmindia's synopsis has her nursing the Nawab through illness, giving away her ornaments to pay for the younger brother's operation, and finally drinking poison on stage — a sequence of unreciprocated services that a song of indirect enquiry would sit inside naturally. Where exactly this ghazal fell in the running order cannot be recovered; the print is lost and no continuity or song booklet for the picture has surfaced.
The Legacy

The song's chief documentary interest today is the conflict over who sang it, which is a useful illustration of how the record for lost 1940s films was assembled: singer-specific fan compilations (Cineplot's Noor Jehan list) and film-specific compendia derived from the Hindi Film Geet Kosh (MySwar, HindiGeetMala) were built independently and do not always reconcile. Where they disagree, as here, the honest catalogue entry is the one that says so.

No print of Bhai Jaan (1945) is known to survive. The film is counted among the lost Hindi productions of the 1940s, so its song titles and Filmindia's November 1945 synopsis and review are effectively all that remain of it.

This is the one credit in the Bhai Jaan album on which the sources openly conflict: Wikipedia (following Cineplot's Noor Jehan song list) names Noor Jehan, MySwar names Zeenat Begum, and HindiGeetMala leaves the singer field blank.

Reviewing the film in Filmindia (November 1945), Baburao Patel noted that the score was 'mostly of gazals' and that a couple of the tunes were 'quite attractive' — but complained that the sheer frequency of ghazals in the picture became monotonous.
