अबूझ माझी

Abujh Majhi (अबूझ माझी) is the Hindi-lyric version of Ochin Majhi, the haunting Baul-folk-inspired opening theme of the soundtrack to Mujib: The Making of a Nation (2023), Shyam Benegal's India–Bangladesh co-produced biopic on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. Composed by Shantanu Moitra, the Hindi adaptation carries new lyrics by Atul Tiwari (distinct from Zahid Akbar's original Bengali words) and is sung by veteran playback singer Shaan, backed by a chorus (Umesh Joshi, Vijay Dhuri, Shripad Lele, Vivek Naik) and traditional Bengali string instruments — dotara and ektara — that anchor the song's folk texture. Released as part of the two-language (Hindi and Bengali) soundtrack on 13 October 2023 through Panorama Music, ahead of the film's 27 October 2023 Hindi/Bengali theatrical release, the song uses the recurring Bengali-Baul image of an 'unknown boatman' who ferries souls across an unseen river — a metaphor the film repurposes to evoke Mujib's own guiding, larger-than-life presence in Bangladesh's independence story.

Shantanu Moitra keeps the arrangement spare and folk-rooted — dotara and ektara (both plucked Bengali folk lutes) carry the melodic line, with a small vocal chorus layered behind Shaan's lead to give the song a communal, devotional lift rather than a solo-ballad feel. Shaan's restrained, unhurried delivery leans into the song's Baul ancestry — the same meditative, drone-like phrasing found in Lalon-tradition boatman songs — rather than a conventional Bollywood playback style, making it one of the more distinctive folk-adjacent tracks in his 2023 discography.

Atul Tiwari's Hindi lyric retains the Baul tradition's central image — an unknowable boatman ('abujh majhi') who ferries the soul across a river that stands in for life and death — a motif rooted in Bengal's Lalon Fakir/Baul mystic-folk canon and carried into the Bengali original 'Ochin Majhi'. Rather than a literal translation of Zahid Akbar's Bengali words, Tiwari's Hindi version is a fresh adaptation built to preserve the same spiritual longing and open-ended questioning tone in Hindi-Urdu poetic vocabulary.

Mujib: The Making of a Nation, directed by veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal and starring Bangladeshi actor Arifin Shuvoo as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is a co-production between India's NFDC and Bangladesh's state agencies — the first government-backed biopic on Bangladesh's founding father, tracing his life from childhood through the 1971 Liberation War to the 1975 coup that killed his family. As the soundtrack's Baul-rooted opening theme, Ochin Majhi/Abujh Majhi is used to set the film's folk-cultural register early, grounding Mujib's story in the rural Bengali musical tradition — Lalon-style boatman songs — that shaped the region's spiritual and political imagination.

Abujh Majhi did not chart commercially and the film itself received a mixed critical reception on release, but the song's official Panorama Music video has drawn over a million YouTube views, a notable figure for a slow, folk-rooted track from a niche biographical drama — reflecting continued audience interest in Shaan's vocal work and the film's historical subject matter in both India and Bangladesh.
