The Monographपरिचय Overview

Meri Jaan is the only officially released standalone song from RK/RKay (also styled RK/RKAY), Rajat Kapoor's 2022 comedy-drama in which he writes, directs and stars alongside Mallika Sherawat, Kubbra Sait, Ranvir Shorey and Manu Rishi Chadha. Composed by Sagar Desai with lyrics by Hussain Haidry and sung by veteran playback singer Shaan, the song was released on 13 July 2022 through Music 24 Records, just ahead of the film's 22 July 2022 theatrical release, and was picturized to reflect the emotional threads of the film's characters. Press coverage at the time described it as a 'soulful track' with a retro vibe carrying modern touches, consistent with the film's own premise — a whimsical story about a filmmaker whose fictional 1960s-tribute character escapes into the real world. Beyond its background score by Sagar Desai, RK/RKay's music identity rests almost entirely on this one song.
The Music

Sagar Desai, better known primarily for background scores, composed Meri Jaan with what press coverage described as a retro vibe carrying a modern flavour — a melodic, mid-tempo arrangement built to showcase Shaan's warm, expressive vocal delivery rather than any elaborate instrumental architecture. As the sole standalone song pulled out from an otherwise background-score-driven film soundtrack, it stands somewhat apart in Desai's filmography, functioning as a distilled, radio-friendly emotional centerpiece for a film that is otherwise scored rather than 'songed.'
The Poetry

Hussain Haidry's lyrics for Meri Jaan were written to compile the different emotional threads running through RK/RKay's characters rather than tell a single linear love story — fitting a film whose plot itself concerns a fictional character bleeding into reality. Specific lyric lines were not located in press coverage or lyrics databases at the time of this entry, but contemporary reports consistently describe the song's tone as soulful and heartwarming, aligned with the film's blend of whimsy and melancholy.
The Story

RK/RKay is a 2021-shot, 2022-released comedy-drama written and directed by Rajat Kapoor, who also plays the dual lead role of RK, a filmmaker making a retro-tribute film to 1960s cinema, and Mahboob, the film-within-the-film's protagonist. When RK feels the production isn't coming together during the edit, Mahboob mysteriously escapes the fictional film and enters the real world, fleeing cartoonish on-screen villains and eventually being taken in by RK's real family. Mallika Sherawat plays Gulabo, the high-maintenance leading lady of the film-within-a-film; Kubbra Sait, Ranvir Shorey and Manu Rishi Chadha round out the supporting cast. Meri Jaan, credited simply as 'from RK/RKay' rather than tied to a specific scene description in available sources, was released as the film's musical calling card ahead of its 22 July 2022 release, produced by Priyanshi Films and Mithya Talkies and presented by Nflicks Pvt Ltd.
The Legacy

RK/RKay received largely positive critical reception — holding an 83% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with several reviewers praising the film's whimsical, rich script — though it remained a modestly-scaled indie release without major commercial or chart impact for its music. Meri Jaan did not chart nationally, but as the sole song release tied to a critically well-regarded film featuring a veteran voice like Shaan, it holds a small but distinct place as the musical identity of an otherwise largely background-scored production.
