Bhusha Kalyani is a Carnatic janya raag derived from the Kalyani melakarta (#65 in Venkatamakhin's 72-melakarta system). Bhusha (भूषा) means ornament or adornment, and Kalyani means auspicious, well-being, or a name for Goddess Parvati/Lakshmi — thus Bhusha Kalyani is the ornament of Kalyani, a beautifully adorned variant of the Kalyani parent. Kalyani is one of the most revered melakartas in Carnatic music (chakra 11, position 5), using all seven notes in their natural positions except for tivra Madhyam (Ma#): Sa Ri2 Ga3 Ma2 Pa Dha2 Ni3. This note-set corresponds exactly to the Kalyan thaat of Hindustani music (Sa Re Ga Ma# Pa Dha Ni), making Kalyani-family raags one of the richest bridges between the two classical systems. The Kalyani melakarta parent was codified by Venkatamakhin (c. 1620 CE) and later became prominent through Tyagaraja's Kalyani-based kritis.
