Watan Parasta (1934) — 'Lover of the Motherland' — is a patriotic-inflected costume drama directed by D. N. Madhok, who also wrote the lyrics. Set in a historical frame that spoke obliquely to nationalist sentiment, the film starred Roshanara Begum and Miss Moti in leading roles. H. C. Bali composed the music; D. N. Madhok's lyrics would have carried his characteristic Urdu eloquence. The patriotic subtext of such pictures made them popular with audiences reading colonial-era allegory into Hindi historical films.
