Synopsisप्रथम विश्वयुद्ध के बाद के माहौल में रची एक एक्शन-रंगत वाली सामाजिक ड्रामा। देश के लिए लड़ने वाला एक सिपाही घर लौटता है, पर युद्धोत्तर आर्थिक मंदी में उसे कोई काम नहीं मिलता। भुखमरी की कगार पर वह अपराध की राह पकड़ लेता है और गैंगस्टर बन जाता है, और फ़िल्म के चरम में पीछा करने वालों के साथ मुठभेड़ में घिरकर गोली का शिकार होता है — एक दुखांत कथा जिसे नायक की भूमिका निभाने वाले अभिनेता हीरालाल ने बाद में अपने करियर की सबसे मार्मिक भूमिकाओं में याद किया।

An action-tinged social drama set against the aftermath of the First World War. A soldier who has fought for his country returns home only to find no work amid the economic depression that follows the war. On the verge of starvation, he slides into crime and becomes a gangster, and in the film's climax he is cornered and shot in an encounter with his pursuers — a tragic arc that the actor Hiralal, who played the lead, later remembered as among the most moving roles of his career.

Sipahi was a black-and-white, mono-sound Hindi production of Indira Movietone, directed by Daud Chand (also recorded as Dawood). Hiralal recalled the climactic encounter — the cornered soldier-gangster shot by six or seven pursuers — as one of the most affecting scenes he ever performed.

Sipahi is a representative example of the wartime social melodrama that smaller studios produced in 1941, using the figure of the returning, unemployed soldier to dramatise the economic hardship of the war years. It is also a notable role for Hiralal, who carried the film as its hero rather than in his more usual character parts.

Like much of the output of the smaller 1941 studios, Sipahi survives mainly as a credit line and a remembered performance rather than as a film one can watch. Its place in the record is preserved largely through Hiralal's own reminiscence of the role and through Hindi-cinema archives that catalogue the year's releases.
