Biography

Protima Dasgupta (also spelled Pratima Dasgupta) was an Indian actress, singer, film producer and director active in Bengali and Hindi cinema from the late 1930s through the 1950s. Born on 5 September 1921 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, into a well-off family, she was educated briefly in England before studying at Rabindranath Tagore's Santiniketan. She made her screen debut in the Bengali drama Gora (1938), based on Tagore's novel, and went on to make her Hindi-film debut in Raj Nartaki (1941). In the Hindi film Raja (1943), scored by music director Khan Mastana with lyrics by Amritlal Nagar, Rammurti Chaturvedi and Bhagwati Charan Sharma, she both starred and sang, recording numbers including 'Nikli Pee Ko Pehnane Haar', 'Nach Nach Kar Thumak Thumak Kar' and 'Aaye Ban Kar Ullas Abhi'. She also appeared in Kunwara Baap (1942), Namaste (1943) and Shararat (1944). Unusually for a woman in the Indian film industry of the 1940s, she moved behind the camera, founding her own banner, Protima Productions, and directing Chhamia (1945) — a Pygmalion-based comedy that was a commercial success — followed by Jharna (1948) and Pagle (1950). She married Major Manzoor Ul Haq, brother of actress Begum Para. Details of her later life and death are not well documented in accessible sources.
