Biography

Master Ashraf Khan was one of the most celebrated actor-singers of the Urdu and Gujarati stage, who carried his powerful voice into Hindi cinema in the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Indore in 1880, he rose to fame in the travelling theatre companies of western India before appearing in films such as Baghban (1938), Baghi (1939) and Azadi-e-Watan (1940). His defining screen work came in Mehboob Khan's Roti (1942), where he both acted and sang Anil Biswas's compositions — including the biting title refrain 'Roti Roti Roti Kyun Ratata' and 'Garibo Par Daya Kar Ke' — songs whose ascetic fervour still stands apart in the era's music. That fervour was real: during these years Khan turned deeply to Sufism, and after leaving the screen he came to be revered as a Sufi saint, a rare journey from theatre stardom to sainthood. He died in Ahmedabad on 11 September 1962.
