A 1942 social drama directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar (A.R. Kardar), starring P. Jairaj, Shobhana Samarth and Mazhar Khan. The film is remembered today less for its plot than for a single, history-making moment in its soundtrack — the screen debut as a playback singer of a twelve-year-old girl named Suraiya, who would go on to become one of Hindi cinema's reigning singing-stars of the 1940s.

Naushad's score for Nai Duniya was sung chiefly by G.M. Durrani and Rajkumari, with the bulk of the lyrics written by Tanveer Naqvi and additional verses by Rammurti Chaturvedi and A. Shah Azeez. The set of eleven songs ranges across romantic duets, a Rajkumari solo and the famous child-voiced Suraiya novelty number.

Nai Duniya sits within Naushad's early Bombay phase, before the run of Kardar and Mehboob films that would make him the most celebrated music director of the 1940s and 1950s. The casting of a twelve-year-old Suraiya for a single number — reportedly because of her clear, untrained voice — became the most repeated anecdote attached to the film.

Nai Duniya holds two enduring footnotes in Hindi-film-music history. It carries an early Naushad score — the composer was still in the formative years of a career that would dominate Hindi cinema for decades — and it gave a child Suraiya her first recorded song, 'Boot Karun Main Polish Babu', the launchpad of one of the era's greatest vocal careers.

While the film itself faded from circulation, its place in music history is secure as the cradle of Suraiya's singing career. From this one children's song she rose to become a leading playback voice and star, and the film is invariably cited as the beginning whenever her story is told.
