Abla ('the helpless woman') is a 1941 Hindi social drama directed by R.N. Vaidya, with a score by Khurshid Khan and lyrics throughout by Pandit Gyan Chandra. Titled after the Hindi word for a vulnerable or defenceless woman, the film belongs to the wave of socially conscious melodramas that examined women's suffering and resilience in pre-Independence India. Its detailed plot is not preserved in surviving records; the film is documented today chiefly through its devotional and lyrical song list.

Behind the Scenes

Little production detail survives for Abla beyond its director, R.N. Vaidya, and its music and lyrics credits. No production banner or studio is recorded in the principal song and film catalogues, a common gap for the smaller socially themed productions of 1941 that did not carry the documentation weight of the major Bombay, Calcutta or Lahore studios.
Significance

Abla is a representative title of the early-1940s social-reform melodrama, a genre that used the figure of the suffering woman to dramatise questions of widowhood, dependence and moral endurance. Its surviving song list — dominated by devotional bhajans and pathos-laden numbers by Pandit Gyan Chandra — preserves the kind of socially earnest musical idiom that ran parallel to the more glamorous studio productions of the year.
Legacy

Abla now exists primarily as a catalogue entry and a list of six documented songs. As with many minor 1941 social dramas, the film print is presumed lost, and its memory is carried by music databases such as HindiGeetMala. It stands as a small data point in the larger story of how 1940s Hindi cinema repeatedly returned to the suffering-woman archetype.
