In 1941, Ghulam Haider and Shamshad Begum wrenched the centre of Hindi film music from east to west with Khazanchi — pushing the dholak to the front and replacing Calcutta's quiet aesthetic with Punjabi rhythm.

By 1941 the soul of Hindi film music lived in Calcutta. New Theatres' aesthetic — classical raga, voice-forward, hushed accompaniment, Saigal's conversational singing — was the national standard. Bombay's studios worked within the same mould, with minor variations. Punjab had its own musical culture — tawaif thumris, folk songs, festival music — but it had not reached the capital cinema.

Dalsukh Pancholi had built a studio in Lahore — Pancholi Pictures — premised on the idea that Punjab's musical culture deserved its place in mainstream Hindi cinema. He chose a young, barely established composer, Ghulam Haider, for Khazanchi. Haider had already worked in Punjabi films and knew what he had: push the dholak to the front, let the chimta be heard, and build the score around a singer whose voice came through the fields — Shamshad Begum.

When 'Sawan Ke Nazare Hain' reached the market, something happened that had not happened before: people came out of theatres with the tune in their feet and hands. The dholak beat that had always been background was now rhythm, was life. Shamshad's voice was not hiding behind the microphone — it was past it, reaching every corner. Gramophone records sold, were played at games, were played at weddings.

Khazanchi is a 'before and after' moment in Hindi film music. Before: Calcutta's raga-led, voice-centred, quiet aesthetic. After: Punjabi rhythm, folk instruments, outdoor-projection voice. In the following decade O.P. Nayyar — himself from Lahore, raised on Haider's soundtracks — would take this revolution to its final form. Bhangra's entry into Hindi cinema began here.
