The Monographपरिचय Overview

The second great Zohrabai showcase from Rattan (1944), 'Sawan Ke Badlo' moves from the playful interrogation of 'Ankhiyan Milake' to a slower, more aching register. Naushad anchors the melody in raag Des — the monsoon raag of longing and separation — and the bansuri counter-melody weaves through the sarangi like rain through a courtyard. Zohrabai's voice here is less teasing and more mournful: the fullness of her lower register carries the weight of waiting that the lyric describes.
The Music

The raag Des structure — its characteristic flattened seventh in descent — gives the melody its characteristic longing. Naushad deploys bansuri and sarangi in conversation rather than unison, creating a layered texture reminiscent of classical semi-classical baithak music.
The Poetry

Madhok's sawan (monsoon) imagery is traditional — the beloved absent in the rain season is a trope from Sanskrit poetry through Braj bhasha — but he refreshes it with the plain Hindi vocabulary that Naushad favoured, keeping the song accessible to a mass audience.
The Legacy

Among the earliest examples of a Hindi film song using classical raag Des in an explicitly popular idiom — a template that later composers like S.D. Burman and Madan Mohan would refine into a major strand of Hindi film music.
