Rajrani Meera (1933) was directed by Debaki Bose for New Theatres Ltd., Calcutta, and produced as a Hindi-language film alongside a simultaneous Bengali version titled Meerabai. The cast was exceptional for the period: Durga Khote played Mirabai, and Prithviraj Kapoor appeared as the King of Mewar — a role cited in accounts of his career as among his finest early performances. K.L. Saigal and Pahari Sanyal were also in the cast. R.C. Boral, in one of his formative years as New Theatres' principal music director, set the bhajans with the restraint that became the studio's house style — voice first, instrumentation subordinate, raag beneath. The text of 'Mere To Girdhar Gopal' is the most celebrated of all Mirabai's attributed bhajans, composed in Braj Bhasha and sung by her as a declaration of total surrender to Krishna. As a cinematic scene, the song represents the moment of Mirabai's complete renunciation of worldly shame — she sits among saints, loses all care for family honour, and the god becomes her only lord. Boral's setting was spare enough that the text could carry its own weight, which is the hallmark of the finest cinematic bhajan arrangements of the early talkie era.
