The Monographपरिचय Overview

In Mehboob Khan's social realist Roti (1942), Begum Akhtar played and sang the role of Mahua, a courtesan whose songs carry the film's emotional subtext of longing and abandonment. Anil Biswas composed within Bhairavi — the raag of farewell and longing — and Begum Akhtar brought her thumri mastery to what would otherwise be a film song: the result was a recording unlike anything else in 1942 Hindi cinema.
The Music

Biswas grounds the song in Bhairavi's characteristic pentatonic descent, letting Begum Akhtar ornament freely in the meend-heavy thumri style. The folk-image of mahua flowers (used to make liquor, associated with Adivasi village life) gives the classical framework an earthy, social-realist texture unusual in film music.
The Poetry

The lyric deploys the mahua flower — a folk symbol of intoxication, poverty, and female waiting — to give Mehboob's social drama its most poetic voice. Longing here is not romantic but existential: no lover is expected; the flowers fall and no one comes.
The Story

Begum Akhtar reportedly recorded her Roti numbers in Bombay — away from her Lucknow home and the mehfil context in which she performed. The studio setting stripped the social scaffolding of the thumri performance space, forcing the voice to carry everything. Some scholars consider these film recordings a distillation of her art precisely because of that isolation.
The Legacy

Roti's Begum Akhtar songs are rarely anthologised but are known to classical-music scholars as the moment when the thumri entered the sound-film with its full emotional architecture intact.
