Overview

By 1930 Faiyaz Khan — 'Aftab-e-Mausiqi', sun of music — was the most commanding khayal voice in India, and his electric-era HMV sides carried that command into drawing rooms. This Bhairavi thumri shows the other Faiyaz: the dhrupad-weighted Agra baritone softening into bol-banao, each repetition of 'banao batiyan' a new shade of complaint and charm.

The Music

Agra gayaki's chiselled noms and gamaks applied to thumri's pliancy — power held in reserve, which is the hardest art.

The Poetry

A nayika's reproach in Braj — 'why spin these false tales?' — the thumri text as conversation, each word an opening for bol-banao.

The Story

Ustad Faiyaz Khan (8 February 1886 – 5 November 1950) was a court musician in Baroda and one of the foremost khayal singers of the Agra gharana — the same institution that claimed descent from Tansen's lineage. He received the title 'Aftab-e-Mausiqi' (Sun of Music) conferred by a princely court in recognition of his singular voice. His gramophone recording activity spanned several decades and labels; the placement of this Bhairavi thumri at c.1930 within his electric-era HMV period should be understood as approximate — the entity's own quality note flags this. What is documented is that Faiyaz Khan's thumri and dadra recordings exist as a small but celebrated subset of his output, contrasting with his voluminous live khayal performances. 'Banao Batiyan' is a traditional Braj-language thumri text whose poetry centres on a nayika confronting her beloved's excuses — 'why do you spin these false tales?' — a text format that lends itself perfectly to bol-banao improvisation. Faiyaz Khan's rendering applies the Agra baand's hallmarks — wide meend, powerful nomtom, and dhrupad-weighted gamaks — to a form that normally permits more playful flexibility. The result is a recording that sounds simultaneously authoritative and intimate, which is the Agra paradox: mastery that softens rather than stiffens.

The Legacy

Margin Notes

Faiyaz Khan was born Ghulam Abbas Khan in Sikandara, near Agra, on 8 February 1886, into a family of hereditary musicians of the Agra gharana.

He received the title 'Aftab-e-Mausiqi' (Sun of Music) from a princely court — an honour that became so synonymous with his name that it is regularly used in music encyclopaedias as a secondary identification.

His gramophone recording output was deliberately limited — roughly 20 recorded sides across Hindusthan Records and HMV — making each surviving disc precious to music historians.

Faiyaz Khan composed under the pen name 'Prem Piya', and several of his thumri compositions remain central to the Agra gharana's active teaching repertoire more than seven decades after his death.

Despite his massive stature as a khayal singer, Faiyaz Khan's thumri and dadra recordings are considered by many scholars to demonstrate even more clearly the Agra style's capacity for emotional directness.
