Adapted from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1866 Bengali novel: a young man (Navakumar) finds a wild, forest-raised woman (Kapal Kundala) after escaping a Tantric Kapalik; he takes her home and weds her, but she cannot belong to civilised domestic life. The tragedy of the woman who is neither of the forest nor of the world became one of Bengali literature's most enduring stories. Pankaj Mullick played the lead and composed the score — rare dual achievement.

Mullick composed the score for a film he was also acting in — the music therefore carries a particular intimacy, most evident in 'Piya Milan Ko Jana', which became the score's lasting gift.

Bankim Chandra's novel was already adapted in Bengali by New Theatres (1933 version also exists). The 1939 Hindi version sought a wider audience while maintaining the tragic fidelity of the source.

Kapal Kundala is a New Theatres literary-adaptation masterpiece — bringing Bengal's canonical 19th-century fiction to Hindi-language cinema with the prestige and fidelity that the studio was known for. Pankaj Mullick's simultaneous acting and music composition was a singular achievement.
