Swarnlata (also spelled Swarn Lata) was an actress and playback singer of the 1940s whose warm, clear soprano made her an effective duet partner in films scored by Naushad. Her most celebrated work came in Rattan (1944), where her pairing with Karan Dewan on 'Ruthe Ho Tum Tumko Kaise Manaaun' became one of the era's most-remembered romantic duets. She worked primarily in Bombay Talkies productions and those of allied producers through the mid-1940s, acting on screen while contributing her voice to the playback track.
