Overview

'Tute Huye Do Dil Darbar Me Aaye' is a Zeenat Begum solo from Kaise Kahoon (1945), composed by Pandit Amarnath to the only lyric Qamar Jalalabadi is credited with on this soundtrack. Period listings give the title in several forms, including 'Toote Hue Do Dil Tere Darbaar Mein Aaye', which makes the address explicit — the two hearts come to *your* court. It is one of the group of solos on which Zeenat Begum carries the film's music almost single-handed.

The Music

Amarnath is writing here for the low, unhurried, classically schooled part of Zeenat Begum's range rather than for the folk attack he gives Shamshad Begum elsewhere on the same album. A petition lyric of this shape asks for a slow tempo and for space between the lines, and the surviving listings place it among the film's serious numbers rather than its light ones. The disc itself is not in circulation, so no account of its scoring is given here.

The Poetry

The word 'darbar' is doing double duty, and Urdu poetry of this period exploits the ambiguity constantly. A darbar is a king's court, where a subject comes to lay a grievance; it is also the court of a saint at a dargah, and by extension of God, where the same posture of petition is transferred to a devotional register. Qamar Jalalabadi — a Punjabi Urdu poet who came to films in the early 1940s and stayed for four decades — sets two broken hearts, not one, in that posture, which turns a private romantic complaint into a joint appeal and quietly implies that the lovers' case is being tried by someone above them. No lyric text is reproduced here.

The Story

Kaise Kahoon was directed by Moti B. Gidwani for Pancholi Art Pictures of Lahore and released on 16 November 1945, with Ragini and Najam-ul-Hasan in the leads. A song in which two hearts come before a higher authority to plead their case sits naturally against a title that asks how something is to be said at all. No source reachable for this catalogue records the film's plot, so none is described here; nor is the placement of this song within the picture documented.

The Legacy

Qamar Jalalabadi outlived nearly everyone else who worked on this film, writing for Hindi cinema into the 1980s. Pandit Amarnath did not: he died in 1947, at thirty-five. Zeenat Begum migrated to Pakistan the same year. The song is now a title in a catalogue, one of the many for which the record is easier to document than to hear.

Margin Notes

This is the only song on the Kaise Kahoon soundtrack credited to Qamar Jalalabadi, who had entered films only a few years earlier and would go on writing Hindi film lyrics into the 1980s.

Period listings disagree on the title: hindigeetmala gives 'Tute Huye Do Dil Darbar Me Aaye' while other HFGK-derived sources record 'Toote Hue Do Dil Tere Darbaar Mein Aaye'. Both point to the same 78-rpm side.
