The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Sharbat-e-Vasl Pila My Dear' is the third of the Amirbai Karnataki–Noor Mohammed Charlie duets in Chand Tara (1945), music by Gyan Dutt, lyrics by Swami Ramanand Saraswati. The title collides two entirely separate registers: 'sharbat-e-vasl' is a Persian izafat construction — the sherbet of union — belonging to the most ornate end of Urdu love poetry, and 'my dear' is plain colonial English. That collision is the joke, and it is also a small piece of social documentation about which languages were in the air in 1940s Bombay.
The Music

Macaronic songs — songs that switch language mid-line — need a tune that can survive the switch, which usually means a simple, marchlike or waltzing phrase that carries the ear over the seam. The English fragment also has to land on a strong beat, or the audience will miss the joke. This is a compositional problem more than a musical one, and composers of the 1940s solved it by keeping such numbers fast, sectional and close to the cabaret and stage-comedy idioms that Bombay's audiences already knew from Parsi theatre.
The Poetry

'Vasl' — union with the beloved — is one of the fixed stations of the ghazal, and 'sharbat-e-vasl' extends it into a metaphor of drinking, which is itself a whole sub-vocabulary of Urdu poetry. To ask for it in that language and then append 'my dear' is to puncture the metaphor at the moment of its greatest elevation. The technique is old — Urdu comic verse has always undercut its own ornament — but the specific choice of English as the puncturing language is of its period, when English was the language of the office, the courtroom and the sahib, and dropping it into a love song made an instant class joke that every listener in a 1945 stalls audience would have caught.
The Story

Noor Mohammed Charlie's entire screen identity was built on this kind of cross-cultural joke: he took his name from Charlie Chaplin, his 1933 breakthrough was called The Indian Charlie, and his comedy worked the seam between Indian domestic life and imported Western manners. A song that mixes Persianate Urdu with English is exactly the material such a persona was written for, and its presence in Chand Tara is the strongest available clue to how the film used him. It also sits within the film's single-lyricist scheme, meaning Swami Ramanand Saraswati wrote both this and the film's monsoon and farewell songs.
The Legacy

The song is not preserved in any circulating collection, but as a title it is the most informative single line in the Chand Tara record: it establishes the film's comic register, confirms how Charlie was being deployed, and dates itself precisely by its language politics. Macaronic Hindi-English film songs became common again in the 1970s and after, by which time the English carried no colonial charge at all — which makes a 1945 example a useful marker of how differently the same device once read.

'Sharbat-e-vasl' is a Persian izafat construction — literally 'the sherbet of union' — placing the phrase at the most ornate end of Urdu love poetry, which is what makes the English 'my dear' that follows it function as a punchline.

Noor Mohammed Charlie's breakthrough film was titled The Indian Charlie (1933); the cross-cultural joke in this song's title is the same register his whole screen persona was built on.
