Overview

An Amirbai Karnataki solo from Gaon Ki Gori (1945), and one of the album's dance-tempo numbers rather than one of its laments. It is one of three songs in Shyam Sundar's twelve-song score that go to Amirbai, who by 1945 was among the busiest playback voices in Bombay, and it belongs to the fair-and-festival strand of the picture rather than to Noor Jehan's interior monologues.

The Music

Written for a dance, the song sits on a firmer rhythmic floor than the album's laments — dholak driving a steady middle tempo, harmonium carrying the melody line, and a phrase structure short enough to be picked up on a first hearing. Amirbai Karnataki's voice, nasal in the way north-Indian folk singing prizes and instantly identifiable on a 78, is used here for character rather than for beauty: it belongs to a performer inside the film's world, not to the heroine's inner life. Shyam Sundar keeps the orchestration deliberately small, as he does across this score, so that the diction stays audible over the dance rhythm.

The Poetry

The catalogued full title carries the whole argument: having met eyes with a handsome man and given her love, the singer has lost her life — jaan gayi, which in this idiom means both that she is undone and, more literally, that something of her has been taken. The construction is the standard folk-song sequence of cause and consequence, laid out in two clauses with no room for negotiation between them, and salone — handsome, comely, with a suggestion of dark good looks — is a village word rather than a courtly one, which fixes the song's register. Wali Saheb, writing for a picture set in the Punjab countryside, uses that register throughout the film's dance and harvest numbers and reserves his Urdu for Noor Jehan.

The Story

Amirbai Karnataki had become a household voice after Kismet (1943) and was singing across studios by 1945; Gaon Ki Gori gave her three numbers of quite different character, this dance number, the bhajan 'Bansi Ki Madhur Dhun Se', and the seasonal 'O Pardesi Raja'. Between them she covers everything in the album that Noor Jehan does not.

The Legacy

The song survives in the standard 1945 song listings and in retrospective surveys of Amirbai Karnataki's female solos of that year, where it is listed with its full title and its Shyam Sundar / Wali Saheb credits. It never became one of the film's remembered numbers in the way the Noor Jehan solos did, but it is one of the few points in the album where the picture's fair-and-dance world is audible on record.

Margin Notes

Amirbai Karnataki sings three of the twelve songs in Shyam Sundar's score, covering the registers that Noor Jehan's numbers do not.

78-rpm labels of the period normally identified a track by its opening line, which is why this song is catalogued under its first words rather than a short title.
