The Monographपरिचय Overview

One of Shanta Patel's five songs in Ji Haan, and the title in the film's list that declares its lineage most openly. Atariya is the flat upper room or roof terrace of the north Indian house; bijuriya is lightning, in the affectionate diminutive that folk song reserves for the things it lives with. Put together, they are the opening image of an entire genre — the woman on her roof while the monsoon sky flares, waiting. The credits are documented across every source consulted: Shanta Patel singing, Pt. Indra writing, S. N. Tripathi composing. Nothing else about the song is, and the passage below stays on the tradition it belongs to rather than claiming knowledge of the recording itself.
The Music

Songs of Yore, surveying S. N. Tripathi's vintage years, says of Ji Haan's songs that they show his mastery over folk idiom, and this is the title in the list where that idiom would be most at home. The barsaat song of the north Indian repertoire — kajri, jhula, sawan geet — moves on a swinging medium rhythm, usually kaherva or dadra, with the melody circling a small group of notes and returning to the same phrase at the end of each line, so that the form itself imitates waiting. Tripathi, trained at Pandit V. N. Bhatkhande's Marris College in Lucknow and raised within reach of that repertoire, had the material first-hand. The description here is of the tradition and of the composer's documented strengths; the specific arrangement of this side has not been auditioned for this entry.
The Poetry

Two words do all the work. The atariya is not a balcony borrowed from Urdu romance but the working roof of a north Indian house — where grain is dried and beds are carried up in summer, and where a woman can be alone and still be outdoors. It is the standard vantage of the virahini, the woman separated from her love, in Braj and Awadhi verse. Bijuriya, lightning, is her weather and her omen: in the kajri repertoire the flash over the roof announces the monsoon that was supposed to bring him home, and its brightness is cruel precisely because it lights an empty terrace. Pt. Indra is writing inside a convention here rather than against it, and the possessive 'mori' — my roof, in the dialect inflection rather than the standard 'meri' — plants the lyric in folk speech from the first word. Beyond the opening line preserved as the title, no text of this song is documented, and none is quoted here.
The Story

A folk-inflected separation song in a stunt picture is less incongruous than it sounds. Ji Haan was made by Gautam Chitra of Bombay for the working-class circuit — Babubhai Mistry directing with a second director given as R. Vaidya or Ramnik Bhatt, Bhagwan and Agha heading the cast — and films of this class routinely put one or two lyrical numbers into an otherwise comic score, because that is what the audience expected of a full evening. Five of Ji Haan's eight songs were written for laughs; the other three, all Shanta Patel's, carried the sentiment. With no print of the film surviving and no synopsis in the reference literature, how this one sat in the story cannot be recovered.
The Legacy

The song has not been written about since it was issued, and it has no reception history to report. Its interest is as evidence: proof that in 1945 the kajri image of the woman on her roof under lightning was still live enough to be handed, without explanation, to the audience of a low-budget action comedy — and that a composer working at speed on a hundred-thousand-rupee picture still reached for it. The record survives in the Saregama catalogue, which for a film with no surviving print is the whole of what remains.

The dialect possessive 'mori' rather than the standard 'meri' marks the lyric as folk speech from its first word — a signal Hindi film lyricists used deliberately to place a song in a rural register.
