The Monographपरिचय Overview

The fifth song in the alphabetical run of Ji Haan's catalogue listing and one of Shanta Patel's five in the film. Saregama prints it as 'Mast Jawani Aai' and hindigeetmala as 'Mast Jawani Aayi'; the credits are otherwise consistent everywhere — Shanta Patel singing, Pt. Indra writing, S. N. Tripathi composing. Nothing beyond the credit line is documented. No commentary on the song exists, its text has never been transcribed, and no print of the film survives to show how it was staged.
The Music

A 'jawani' number in the Bombay cinema of the mid-1940s meant a song written to be moved to — dholak forward in the mix, a repeating melodic hook rather than an unfolding line, and a cadence that arrives often enough to cue a step. S. N. Tripathi could write in this register as easily as in the raag-based one he is remembered for; the two sat side by side in a working composer's week in 1945, when he delivered several scores in a single year. Songs of Yore's assessment of this film's music emphasises his command of folk idiom, which in a celebratory number usually means a folk rhythm rather than a folk tune. That is a statement about the composer and the form, not a description of this particular recording, which has not been auditioned for this entry.
The Poetry

'Mast' is one of the load-bearing words of the Urdu-Hindi film lyric — intoxicated, abandoned, careless in the specific sense of being carried by one's own pleasure rather than being reckless. Attached to jawani, youth, it names the state rather than the event: not that youth has come, but that it has come already intoxicated. Pt. Indra was writing to a stunt film's brief here, eight lyrics of which five were comic, and a line built on 'mast jawani' is the kind of unambiguous, first-hearing phrase that brief demands. Nothing of the lyric beyond the opening words preserved as the title is documented, and nothing is reproduced here.
The Story
Atul's Song A Day

The film was produced by Gautam Chitra of Bombay for the working-class circuit, on a budget contributors to the Atul's Song A Day archive put at around a lakh of rupees, with Bhagwan Abhaji Palav and Agha at the head of the cast. Casting actresses who could sing their own numbers — Shanta Patel for five songs, Meera for two — was part of the same arithmetic: professional playback voices were an expense this class of picture did not carry. What that produced, as a by-product, is a soundtrack sung in acting voices rather than trained ones, which suits a celebratory number better than it suits a classical one.
The Legacy

Ji Haan's recovery, such as it is, has gone to three of its eight songs — the two comic numbers published by Atul's Song A Day and the folk duet discussed by Songs of Yore. This is not one of them. It survives as a Saregama track and as a line in the HFGK-derived song lists, with the title spelled two ways and nothing else attached to it.
