The Monographपरिचय Overview

One of the eleven songs of Devdasi (1945), music by K.C. Dey, lyric by Narottam Vyas. Its title stands apart from everything else in the album: where the other ten address a deity or name him, this one speaks of 'nikhaar' — the bloom or heightened radiance of one's own appearance. In a film about a temple dancer that difference is likely to have mattered dramatically, but the film's plot is not documented and no claim is made here about the scene. The catalogues record no singer for the title.
The Music

Composer and lyricist are the only documented facts about the recording. What the title implies is a lighter setting than the album's bhajans — a song of adornment or self-regard would call for the dance-adjacent pulse K.C. Dey used for 'Tota Bola More Kanha' rather than the slow declamatory line he reserved for prayer. The album's instrumentation throughout is harmonium, tabla and light strings.
The Poetry

'Nikhaar' is a precise word — not beauty as a fixed property but beauty freshly come out, the way a colour brightens after washing or a face after happiness. In Hindi and Urdu poetry it almost always implies a cause outside the speaker: something has happened, and the face is reporting it. That makes a first-person 'nikhaar' lyric quietly narrative even when nothing is described, and in the devotional frame of this album it can be read either as worldly vanity or as the visible effect of grace — the record does not say which, and neither does this entry.
The Story

Devdasi was a New Maharashtra Productions picture shot in Bombay, with Prithviraj Kapoor and Monica Desai leading and K.C. Dey both scoring and appearing. Every one of its eleven songs came from the same composer-lyricist pair, so a title this different in register is a deliberate placement within a single-hand programme rather than an accident of assembling songs from several writers. The plot itself is not recoverable from accessible sources.
The Legacy

Like three other titles in the album, this one survives only as an entry in the gramophone-era song lists: a name, a composer, a lyricist. That is an accurate description of what remains of a great deal of 1940s Hindi film music, and this archive records the gap rather than filling it.

The gramophone-era catalogues that preserve Devdasi's song list record this title with its composer and lyricist but without a singer credit. This archive leaves the singer field empty rather than guessing.

This is one of the few Devdasi titles that does not name a deity — most of the album's eleven songs name or address Krishna, Hari or Radha directly.
