The Monographपरिचय Overview

The second of Shamshad Begum's two solos in the Hamara Sansar score, and its counterweight: where 'Hum Kis Se Karein Shikwa' is a lament that opens by admitting there is nobody left to complain to, this one is built on the arrival of good news. Both are Gobind Ram compositions to Ramesh Gupta's words, and both survive on the commercial album while the film itself does not. Gobind Ram and Shamshad Begum worked together repeatedly through the 1940s, and giving a single film two Shamshad solos of opposite emotional temperature is a fair indication of how much weight this score was willing to put on her.
The Music

No description of the arrangement survives and the side is not among the Hamara Sansar transfers that vintage-music collectors have put back into circulation, so the sound of it is not something this record can honestly describe. What is documented is the shape of the opportunity. Gobind Ram is remembered in the vintage-music literature as a composer whose strength was rhythm and orchestration, trained in Lahore and working in the mainstream Bombay idiom rather than an identifiably Punjabi one; Shamshad Begum's instrument was a hard, bright, forward-placed voice that carried through thin 1940s orchestration without needing to be pushed. A song about a letter arriving is a small, domestic, interior subject, and the interest of such a side is usually in how little the composer puts under a voice like that.
The Poetry

Paati is the plain, unliterary Hindi word for a letter — not the Persianate khat or naama that an Urdu ghazal would reach for, but the word a village household would use — and the title places the song squarely in the domestic register the film's own title announces. No lyric text has been published; HindiGeetMala's page for the song records that its words have never been contributed to the site, so nothing beyond the opening line is known. The letter-song is one of the durable forms of Hindi film music, and its logic is always the same: the beloved is absent, the letter stands in for the body, and the singer addresses an object rather than a person. What makes the form work on a 78-rpm side is that it needs no plot — the arrival of the letter is already the whole event.
The Story

Hamara Sansar was a Prakash Pictures social directed by Shanti Kumar, made in the stretch when the studio was deliberately moving away from the mythologicals that had made its name. The film failed commercially and no print is known to circulate, so nothing is recorded about which character sings this number or where it falls in the story. The soundtrack is unusually tidy for 1945: eight documented titles, one composer, one lyricist, and four singers between them.
The Legacy

Like the rest of the album, the song has outlasted the picture: Saregama carries it among the six Hamara Sansar numbers still commercially available, listed there as 'Mere Preetam Ki Pati Aai'. It has attracted no writing of its own — no vintage-music blog has taken it up the way Atul's Song A Day took up three other sides from this film, and HindiGeetMala reports neither lyrics nor an authorised video for it. Its claim on attention is entirely by association: it is a Gobind Ram–Shamshad Begum record from the same sessions that produced Mohammed Rafi's ghazal for this film, and it is one of two Shamshad solos in a score that otherwise spreads its voices thin.

Margin Notes

One of only two Shamshad Begum solos in the film, and the optimistic one — the other, 'Hum Kis Se Karein Shikwa', is a lament of resignation to fate.

'Paati' is the everyday Hindi word for a letter, in contrast to the Persianate vocabulary the film's Rafi ghazal draws on.
