मेरे प्राणों में पग धुनि जागी

A Rajkumari solo from Ratnavali (1945), composed by Pt. Gobind Ram. It is the only song of the film for which no lyricist is recorded anywhere — not in the Geet Kosh listing, not in myswar, not in hindigeetmala — and the credit is left empty here rather than assigned to one of the film's three known writers on probability. The title turns on an unusual image: not footsteps heard, but the sound of footsteps waking up inside the singer's own life-breath.

Only audio survives and no account of the scoring exists, so nothing is described here. Structurally this is the third and last of Rajkumari's solos in the film, and it completes a set that runs from prayer to elation to this quieter interior register. Pt. Gobind Ram is credited with about thirty Hindi films and is remembered chiefly for the singers he advanced: he recorded eighty-six songs with Shamshad Begum across nineteen films, did as much as anyone to establish Zohrabai Ambalewali, brought Zeenat Begum into films and gave early encouragement to Mohammed Rafi. His idiom of these years mixes light music, ghazal and thumri with folk material and a distinct Punjabi tinge.

Pag dhuni — the sound of a footfall — is placed not in the ear but in the praan, the breath or life-force, and the verb is jaagi, awoke. The effect is to make the beloved's approach an internal event rather than an external one: nothing has actually been heard, something has stirred within. The tradition behind the figure is the abhisarika's, the woman waiting through the night for a lover who may or may not be on his way, in which every ordinary night sound becomes a footstep. Here the anticipation has been pushed one step further inward, past hearing altogether.

Ratnavali was Amar Pictures' costume adaptation of the Sanskrit Ratnavali attributed to emperor Harsha, directed by Surendra Desai. The Hindi Film Geet Kosh records eight songs; this is the eighth. Rajkumari, who sings three of them, was among the most heavily recorded female voices of the 1940s and worked repeatedly with Gobind Ram.

This was the last of Ratnavali's eight songs to be documented online, in December 2025, completing a soundtrack whose first entry had been written up in May 2013 — twelve and a half years to reassemble the songs of a single 1945 film. The absent lyricist credit is the residue of that process: the Geet Kosh itself does not have the name, and there is no surviving print or record sleeve left to consult.
