Mera Market Ke Saamne Makaan Hai

Overview

The curiosity of Ghar's soundtrack. Both HindiGeetMala and MySwar credit this duet to Amirbai Karnataki and Allah Rakha — that is, to the film's own music director, who sings on exactly one of the eight songs he wrote for it. Saregama, which sells the track, credits it the same way, to 'Amirbai Karnataki, A.R. Qureshi' — three independent sources agreeing on a composer's singing credit. No lyric text has ever been published, so beyond that the credit is the whole of what is known; but the credit is unusual enough to be worth an entry on its own.

The Music

The recording survives commercially but no source consulted describes the setting, and this entry is written without having heard it, so the music is not characterised here. The one thing the credit does establish is a working method: Alla Rakha, a Punjab gharana tabla player who had begun scoring films in the 1940s under the name A. R. Qureshi, was evidently willing to sing on his own soundtrack when a male voice was wanted, in an industry where the composer-as-singer was becoming steadily less common as playback professionalised.

The Poetry

Roopbani's text has not been preserved. The title is a flatly colloquial Hindustani line about a house standing opposite the market, and it carries the English loanword 'market' unassimilated, which places the song's diction in ordinary urban speech rather than in the literary register Roopbani uses for the film's laments. That is an observation about the title's language and nothing more: what the song did with that setting, and in what tone, cannot be recovered from any source consulted, and the entry stops there.

The Story

Ghar was a Sunrise Pictures family drama directed by V. M. Vyas, whose soundtrack sets two widow's laments against a group of lighter numbers. This track's placement in the film is not documented, and neither is the identity of the character Alla Rakha's voice was standing in for — if it was standing in for one at all, since composers of this period sometimes sang from off-screen or for a minor player rather than for a lead.

The Legacy

Alla Rakha's reputation rests on the tabla and on a classical partnership that took him from Bombay to Monterey and Woodstock; his film scoring is a footnote to it, and his singing is a footnote to the footnote. This is that footnote. The track is still on sale and almost never played, but the credit is firmly documented in three independent sources, and it records something real about how a mid-budget Bombay studio made a soundtrack in 1945 — with whoever was in the room.

Margin Notes

HindiGeetMala, MySwar and Saregama all list the film's own music director as a singer on this track and on no other song of Ghar. Saregama credits him under his film name, A.R. Qureshi.

MySwar records the title in its longer form, 'Mera Market Ke Saamne Makaan Hai'; HindiGeetMala shortens it to 'Mera Market Ke Samne'.
