मैं तो ना बोलूँ

One of the eleven songs documented on record for Amrapali (1945), and one of the five for which no singer is recorded. Some listings give the title in a doubled form ('Main To Na Boloon Na Boloon'); the film-song catalogue used here has the shorter form. The line belongs to the maan song — the pique or sulk of the beloved — a form in which the announced refusal to speak is itself the address.

No recording is available. The maan song of the period is characteristically medium-tempo, light on its feet and built around a repeating mukhda, since the refusal has to be restated to keep working; dholak usually carries it. Saraswati Devi's score for this film is otherwise weighted towards slow and reflective settings, so this and the dance number are where its lighter side sits.

Only the title is documented. Its grammar is the familiar one of maan: main to — 'as for me' — sets the speaker apart before the verb even arrives, and na boloon states an intention rather than a fact, which is why the form is comic rather than tragic. Nothing about the song's placement in the film is recorded, and nothing is inferred.

Amrapali (1945) was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal for Murli Movietone and drew on the legend of Amrapali of Vaishali, the celebrated nagarvadhu of the Licchavi republic who, in the traditional account, renounced her position and gave her mango grove and fortune to the Buddha's order. Sabita Devi, Prem Adib, Jeevan, Arun, Jagdish Sethi, Badri Prasad, Gulab and Sankatha Prasad are the documented cast. Saraswati Devi composed eleven songs for the picture to lyrics by Kavi Pradeep — one of the few soundtracks she wrote after leaving Bombay Talkies.
