Overview

A K.L. Saigal solo from Tadbir (1945), music by Lal Mohammad and words by Swami Ramanand Saraswati. Against the film's run of fate-complaints, this one asserts the opposite: the singer declares himself a free bird. The bird as an image of the unhoused soul is common ground between the Urdu ghazal, where it is usually caged, and the Hindi bhajan, where it is usually about to fly off and leave the body behind; the title takes the second reading and states it as fact rather than as longing.

The Music

Set at a walking rather than a lamenting pace, which the title's assertion requires — a bird's-freedom lyric taken slow would collapse into irony. Lal Mohammad had one 78-rpm side to work with, and Saigal, whose diction is the most frequently described feature of his singing, was a natural fit for a lyric whose whole force is in the plainness of its statement. The arrangement is not documented and is not described here.

The Poetry

Panchhi — bird — is one of the very few words that carries equal weight in both of the film's poetic registers. In the ghazal tradition the bird is normally a prisoner, and its freedom is spoken of only as a loss. In the bhakti and nirgun traditions that Swami Ramanand Saraswati's name points towards, the bird is the jiva, the living soul, temporarily perched in a body it will leave without ceremony. Calling oneself azad, free, in that second sense is not a boast about circumstance but a statement about attachment: nothing here belongs to me, so nothing here holds me. It is the only real answer the film's lyric-set offers to its own fate-complaints. No lyric text is reproduced.

The Story

Tadbir paired this Saigal number with a Suraiya solo built on the same image — 'Udne Wale Panchhi' — so the bird figure runs through the film twice, once for each lead. With no surviving plot summary it cannot be said whether that was a deliberate structural rhyme by the lyricist or a coincidence of the song list, but a single poet wrote all twelve sides, which makes the echo unlikely to be accidental.

The Legacy

It circulates today within Saigal collections rather than on its own, and is one of the Tadbir titles most often listed when the film's soundtrack is summarised in secondary sources.

Margin Notes

Tadbir contains two separate bird songs — this Saigal solo and Suraiya's 'Udne Wale Panchhi' — both written by the same lyricist, Swami Ramanand Saraswati.

Catalogue listings render the title variously as 'Mai Panchhee Aajaad' and 'Main Panchhi Aazad'; the transliteration used here follows the most common reading.
