Overview

One of Shanta Patel's five songs in Ji Haan and, by its title, one of the three that are not comic. The credits are firmly documented — Shanta Patel singing, Pt. Indra writing, S. N. Tripathi composing — and Saregama's catalogue prints the full title as 'Koi Bol Raha Hai Kya Man Mein', where the HFGK-derived listing at hindigeetmala carries only the shorter 'Koi Bol Raha Hai'. Nothing further about the song is recorded: no commentary, no text, no note of how it was staged, and no print of the film. What follows is grounded in the credits, the title and the documented character of the score, and stops there.

The Music

An introspective solo in a 1945 Bombay score sat at the quiet end of the studio's resources: a sustained melodic instrument — sarangi, or a violin used in the sarangi's manner, which was Tripathi's own first instrument — over a slow tabla or no percussion at all in the opening, with the harmonium filling underneath. Tripathi had trained at Pandit V. N. Bhatkhande's Marris College in Lucknow and had played violin in the Bombay Talkies orchestra under Saraswati Devi before he began composing, and reflective numbers of this kind are where that grounding usually shows. The specific arrangement of this recording has not been auditioned for this entry and is not described here as fact.

The Poetry

The title stages a small drama of interiority: something inside the man — mind, heart, the seat of feeling in Hindi usage, not quite either English word — is speaking, and the singer is asking after it rather than announcing it. That question form matters. It is the difference between a lyric that declares a feeling and one that catches the speaker mid-discovery, still working out what she has heard in herself. The device is old in Hindi devotional verse, where the inner voice is often the divine one, and it carried over into the film lyric of the 1930s and 40s as a way to write about desire without naming its object. Which of those two the lyric does here is not recoverable: the text is not documented, and none of it is reproduced in this record.

The Story

Ji Haan was a stunt picture — Wikipedia files it under Action — produced by Gautam Chitra of Bombay and directed by Babubhai Mistry, the trick photographer who had co-directed Muqabala (1942) and Mauj (1943) with Nanabhai Bhatt on the Fearless Nadia pictures, working here with a second director listed as R. Vaidya on indiancine.ma and as Ramnik Bhatt in the HFGK-derived account. Bhagwan and the comedian Agha carried the comedy and the action; Shanta Patel and Meera carried the songs. In a score where five of eight numbers were written for laughs, the three lyrical songs are all Shanta Patel's, which suggests the film used her as its serious voice and Meera as its comic one — though with no print surviving, that remains an inference from the song list rather than an observation of the film.

The Legacy

Atul's Song A Day ने खोजा, न वह जिस पर Songs of Yore ने त्रिपाठी के आरंभिक वर्षों के सर्वेक्षण में लिखा।

No writer has taken this song up. It was not one of the two Ji Haan numbers the archival blog Atul's Song A Day recovered, nor the one Songs of Yore discussed in its survey of Tripathi's vintage years. It exists as a Saregama track and two catalogue lines that do not even agree on its full title. Recording that accurately is more useful than inventing a reception history it never had.
