The Monographपरिचय Overview

One of the seven Chand Chakori titles for which Amirbai Karnataki is named as the singer, composed by Bulo C. Rani to words the catalogues credit to Pandit Indra. The title is built on a word that marks the song's register precisely: qasid, the Persian-Urdu term for a messenger or courier, and one of the standard dramatis personae of the classical ghazal. To address the wind as qasid is to draft the only thing that can still travel between two separated people into carrying a message - a conceit old enough to have been worn smooth, and still the most efficient way a lyric can say that every ordinary channel of contact has closed. No recording has surfaced, so the entry stops at what the catalogues hold.
The Music

The recording has not been located and nothing about its arrangement can be stated. Its interest lies in the pairing it documents: a lyric in the ornamental Urdu register handed to Amirbai Karnataki, whose voice was not the trained, filigreed instrument of a Zohrabai or a Noor Jehan but a plainer, warmer, more conversational one - the voice that carries six of the eight songs Anil Biswas wrote for Kismet (1943). A qasid song in that voice would have been argument rather than display, and that is consistent with everything documented about how Bulo C. Rani wrote at Ranjit in these years.
The Poetry

The messenger is a structural device before it is an image. A ghazal that sends a qasid concedes three things in one breath: the beloved is out of reach, direct speech is impossible, and the speaker is willing to trust a third party with what she cannot say herself. Choosing the wind as that third party sharpens all three, because the wind is the one messenger who cannot be bribed, delayed or blamed, and equally the one who cannot be relied on to deliver. The figure had a particular life in the Hindi-Urdu film lyric of the 1940s, where separation was usually enforced by family or circumstance rather than by the beloved's indifference, and where a natural courier - wind, cloud, bird, river - let the songwriter dramatise distance without assigning fault. Which of Chand Chakori's three billed lyricists actually wrote this one cannot be established beyond hindigeetmala.net's attribution to Pandit Indra, and nothing of the text past the title has been recovered.
The Story

Chand Chakori was made at Ranjit Movietone, the Bombay studio founded in 1929 by Chandulal Shah and Gohar, which by the 1940s was one of the largest production houses in the country and specialised in socially themed drama. Kidar Sharma directed; Mumtaz Shanti and Surendra played the leads; Bulo C. Rani, who had been on the Ranjit payroll since 1939, wrote all thirteen songs. Amirbai Karnataki sang at least seven of them, this among them, at a point when she was near the top of her profession; her own peak is dated to about 1947, after which Lata Mangeshkar's rise displaced the generation of singers she belonged to.
The Legacy

The song's value now is as a marker of register. Chand Chakori's surviving titles are not uniform: some are in a plain Braj-inflected Hindi, some in the Persianised Urdu of the ghazal, and the presence of both across a single Ranjit score shows how comfortably a 1945 soundtrack moved between the two vocabularies without regarding them as separate traditions. A word like qasid sitting a few titles away from a jogan and a gajra is the ordinary condition of Hindi film lyric writing in this decade, and it is worth recording precisely because later habit hardened the two into opposed camps.

Qasid, the word at the centre of this title, is a stock character of the classical ghazal rather than a figure of speech - the paid courier who carries a letter to the beloved and is interrogated on his return.
