'Rudra' (3:00) is A. R. Rahman's invocation of Shiva for Chhaava (Sony Music India, 2025), sung entirely by Marathi classical vocalist Nakul Abhyankar. With lyrics by Kshitij Patwardhan, it serves as a devotional anchor in the album — Sambhaji Maharaj's private prayer to Rudra, the destructive-protective aspect of Shiva, before battle. At exactly three minutes, it is the album's most concentrated spiritual statement.

Rahman deploys tabla, mridangam, and a low-register tanpura drone beneath Abhyankar's classically trained voice, which moves through rapid taan passages and sustained gamaks that showcase his deep grounding in the Gwalior gharana tradition. The composition avoids melody in the conventional film-song sense, functioning instead as a structured improvisation — closer to a classical bandish than a playback number.

Patwardhan's Sanskrit-inflected lyric follows the Rudrashtakam tradition of liturgical poetry — compact, sonorous, and built for repetition. Each line amplifies Rudra's attributes: destroyer, protector, the third eye, the ganga-crowned ascetic.

Nakul Abhyankar's involvement in Chhaava came through his prior collaboration with Rahman on concert projects. For 'Rudra' specifically, Abhyankar reportedly studied Marathi devotional abhang and powada traditions to find a vocal approach that could honor both Hindustani classical singing and Maharashtra's devotional musical heritage.

'Rudra' became the album's most popular track among devotional listeners, frequently shared on spiritual platforms and used in Mahashivaratri and Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in 2025.
