Overview

'Pyar Badha Ke' is the second of three duets shared by Amirbai Karnataki and Noor Mohammed Charlie in Chand Tara (1945), with music by Gyan Dutt and words by Swami Ramanand Saraswati. The title is grammatically incomplete — a conjunctive participle, 'having increased love' — which in Hindi always requires a main clause to follow, and in film songwriting that missing clause is almost invariably a reproach: having raised my hopes, you then did something. Because the film is not in circulation, the completion is not recoverable, and this entry records only what the catalogue preserves.

The Music

By the mid-1940s the Bombay studio recording chain was still a single microphone into a wax master, which meant a duet had to be balanced physically in the room — singers stepping toward and away from the mic — rather than in a mix afterwards. Composers wrote around this: alternating rather than overlapping voices, short instrumental links to cover the movement, and a refrain sung in unison at a fixed distance. Gyan Dutt's duet writing of this period follows that discipline, and the constraint is audible in the shape of surviving recordings from the same studios and years.

The Poetry

The conjunctive participle — badha ke, mila ke, laga ke — is one of the workhorses of the Hindi film lyric because it lets a song open on an action already completed and leave the consequence hanging over the whole verse. 'Akhiyan Mila Ke' from Rattan the previous year is built on exactly this grammar. The device carries an implicit moral claim: it says the other party did something deliberate, and the singer is now entitled to name what followed. Setting it in a duet rather than a solo changes the balance, because the accused is present and can answer, which is the structural difference between a lament and an argument.

The Story

Chand Tara belongs to a 1945 release calendar crowded with far better-remembered films — Zeenat, Humayun, Pehli Nazar, Badi Maa — and it left no trace in the trade retrospectives that preserved those. Its cast was headed by Swarnalata, an established leading lady of the period, which suggests a mainstream rather than a fringe production, but no reviews or box-office figures have been located. The only complete record of the film is its song list, and that list is what this catalogue reconstructs.

The Legacy

There is no evidence the song circulated beyond the film's run. Its value in a reference database is comparative: three duets in a ten-song film, all given to the same pair, is a measurable fact about how this production allocated its music, and comparing that ratio across the year's releases is the kind of question a complete catalogue makes answerable and an incomplete one does not.

Margin Notes

1945 was a crowded year in Bombay: Chand Tara was released alongside Zeenat, Humayun, Pehli Nazar and Badi Maa, all of which left a documented afterlife that Chand Tara did not.

Recording in Bombay studios in 1945 still went through a single microphone to a wax master, so duet balance was achieved by singers physically moving toward and away from the mic.
