Overview

'Om Jai Jai Shankar' is the devotional centre of Shankarrao Vyas's Vikramaditya score, recorded in two versions: this group rendering by Amirbai Karnataki, G. M. Durrani and Manna Dey, and a separate Manna Dey solo. Ramesh Gupta wrote the words. Issuing a hit devotional number twice — once as a chorus and once as a solo — was standard 78-rpm practice, and the fact that Vyas did it here identifies this as the song the film was built to send home with the audience.

The Music

A film aarti of this period was written to be joined in, not admired: a short repeating phrase in the middle of the voice, a strong downbeat you can clap to, and a refrain built around a name of the deity so that anyone in the hall could pick it up on the second pass. That is why the group version exists at all — the chorus is not decoration but the point. Vyas, trained at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya under Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, had spent his working life in exactly this territory: Paluskar's whole project had been to make devotional singing congregational again. The scoring is undocumented, but a chorus of this kind would normally have carried tabla or dholak with harmonium and cymbals.

The Poetry

'Om Jai Jai Shankar' is an invocation rather than a poem — it puts the syllable Om, the acclamation 'jai', and the name Shankar in a single breath, which is the oldest and most economical shape a Hindi devotional refrain can take. Shankar is one of Shiva's benign names, the aspect that grants rather than destroys, and it is the name a court film would reach for when the king and his people need protection. Note also who is singing it: two of the three voices, Amirbai Karnataki and G. M. Durrani, were Muslim, and neither their names nor their presence on a Shiva chorus needed comment in 1945. That easy crossing is one of the things the pre-Partition record catalogue quietly documents.

The Story

The film was made for the Vikram Bimillennium Committee's celebration of two thousand years of the Vikram Samvat, and Vijay Bhatt directed it as history rather than legend — Prithviraj Kapoor as the king of Avanti, Kalidas installed as court poet, and a war against the Scythian Shakas at the close. In a film organised around a Hindu king's dharmic authority, a Shiva chorus is structural: it is the sequence in which the court and the crowd are shown to share one devotion, and it is placed on the record twice for that reason. Prakash Pictures had used the same logic two years earlier in Ram Rajya (1943), the studio's biggest success, scored by the same composer.

The Legacy

The song did not outlive the film in any traceable way; no circulating recording of either version has been found, and later 'Om Jai Jai Shankar' titles in Hindi cinema are unrelated compositions. What the two versions do preserve is a piece of 78-rpm commercial thinking — that a devotional number worth pressing was worth pressing twice, in a group form for the hall and a solo form for the singer's own following — and a snapshot of three careers in mid-flight in 1945: Amirbai Karnataki near her peak, Durrani at the height of his influence, and Manna Dey still a young hire.

Margin Notes

Two of the three voices on the film's Shiva chorus — Amirbai Karnataki and G. M. Durrani — were Muslim, a routine and unremarked feature of devotional recording in the pre-Partition Bombay industry.

Composer Shankarrao Vyas (1898–1956) trained from the age of eleven under Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, founded music schools in Ahmedabad and Bombay, and scored roughly thirty-two Hindi films between 1937 and 1954, most of them mythological or devotional subjects.

Vikramaditya was made at the request of the Vikram Bimillennium Committee, which was marking two thousand years of the Vikram Samvat calendar — one of the very few Hindi films of the 1940s commissioned by a public body rather than initiated by a studio.
